SOUMEN BHOWMICK: Prototypes of fear

27 September - 13 October 2024

And butterflies flutter around frightened faces.

Soumen Bhowmick is an Indian artist and curator now based in Kolkata, after a long stay in New Delhi. A committed artist, he delivers a twilight vision of today's India. Strongly affected by the human and social consequences of the Covid 19 pandemic and the very strict confinement imposed on the population, Soumen Bhowmick presents a series of portraits entitled Prototypes of fear / Prototypes de la peur which traces the heavy atmosphere of daily life during the pandemic. He also suggests to the tracers of his drawings the tense social and political atmosphere that exists between the different communities that make up India,

Yet, behind the fear, the corpses and the spreading virus, Soumen sees neither good nor bad. Like the macabre dances of the Middle Ages, the artist builds a universe to ward off fate and move forward, despite everything. And then the butterflies fly around the frightened faces.
