Mireille Kassar et Dominique Gex ressentent que plus grand qu'eux est l'art, son histoire, sa vie, sa transmission, ses frayeurs, ses joies.
Dominique Gex and Mireille Kassar have ‘ a common business’ – painting.
….And stories of reefs, a sensitivity to each other's work, an attentiveness to what the works reveal or negate, and what they seek or capture, at a given moment in the journey. A correspondence found its way to them, unbiden—it wasn't a choice, but something that came to them. Like a vision unfolding little by little, opening up an unexpected perception of oneself, of the other, and of the work.
This type of correspondence -exchanging for the sake of the action- had suddenly been revealed to them as something that had been missing.
It turns out that a correspondence from within the creative process had been lacking, yet it
was naturally rediscovered; like a child swimmer who already knew how: to breathe underwater. Their correspondence is not ‘about’ painting, it comes from within painting.
Both artists are also craftsmen, evolving in an art world where the hand has given way to the brain over the last 30 years. In his last interview, Jean-Luc Godard said, ‘If there's anything to be saved, it's the hand’. She paints, she films - he paints, he writes. It's fair to say that Dominique Gex and Mireille Kassar have kept their hand. And it's this know-how that they pass on as teachers when each is faced with the challenge of passing on their artistic skills.
Everything seperates them. Kassar is in the tradition of travelling painters. She is in exile, and her career is marked by paradigm shifts.
Their ways of being in the world and their works are completely different, even opposite. Against, yet close. For their works and journeys echo each other, gaze at each other; and they share a deep faith in what transcends them. They feel that art—its history, its life, its transmission, its fears, its joys—is greater than themselves; greater still is their shared love for what, being alive, lends itself to their lives. Art joins them in the game.
Gex and Kassar feel the necessity to remain in a state of “experimentation for nothing”… To wrest this possibility away from the imperatives of life on earth; to loosen the grip—because, more essential than the so-called “essentials,” there is the life of experimentation.
The adventure has already begun.
